In its 22 year anniversary Biological Station Kalimok published report in Science

In the remote 1992 the row building of illegally constructed hunting hut through the open field, far from the village Nova Cherna, in district of Tutrakan was donated to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Despite of the missing financial support from the Bulgarian National Science Foundation.and complete lack of interest in the research of Kalimok Station from Bulgarian State the enthusiasm of young researchers of the team under supervision of Associate professor Dr. Pavel Zehtindjiev prevailed even in the most difficult periods. Today the research group of blood parasites can be proud with over 50 publications in journals with IF.
The research on the bird malaria, its transmission patterns, host –parasite interaction and the effects of the disease in the individuals as well as in the evolution of the species are of primary interest in the European Research Environment.
As a result of large international cooperation and hard experimental work in Kalimok Station a number of controlled experiments with malaria infections in wild birds are investigated. The results published in SCIENCE undoubtedly demonstrated that individuals with chronic infections suffer long-term costs that act via telomere shortening to have consequences for survival, lifetime reproductive success, and offspring quality .

The discovery of the hidden coast of malaria put light on the new mechanisms of evolution and warrants promising perspectives in the human efforts against the second most dangerous disease in the world – the malaria.

Bulgarian - Lithuanian exchange

In the middle of September this year we had very nice visit from our "avian blood parasites" colleges, from  Lithuanian Research Centre, Vilnius.
The visit was organized by the research group of Prof. Gediminas Valkunas. We spent a week together, so we had several nice working days in "Kalimok" biological station.

in same net in one of the mornings.

After couple of days being together we organized a mini conference in the village of Tulenovo (north Black See) where all people from both research groups gave a talk in their own studies. And the young specialists got the opportunity to present their work and results, which gave important feedback.

Vidas Palinauskas and Dimitar Dimitrov were the "chairman" of our two-day conference.

There were a lot of questions and long discussions during the presentations, which is very difficult at bigger conferences.

Looking forward to our next meeting, friends!

MalariaRCN Workshop, 2014

At the end of July two members of our avian blood parasite RG took part in the Third Annual Conference and Workshop on Malaria and Related Parasites of Wildlife which was held at the National Conservation and Training Center (NCTC) in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

The workshop gathered 24 students from different countries around the world, all of which engaged in the field of haemosporidian parasite studies. Trough lectures and practicals we gained significant knowledge about morphological identifications of malaria and related parasites, vectors needed for their transmission and processing DNA sequences.

We were able to practice preparation of blood smears (quite important for futher identification) and see the whole process of catching birds to taking samples, storing them and staining smears.

Working hard on identification of haemosporidian parasites in blood smears

Presentations of our instructors were very interesting and helpful.

We need some nice food to keep us in good mood. (Strahil eating crabs for the first time)

Vectors day – setting traps and dissecting salivary glands and gut in search of sporozoites and ookinetes

All of the participants gave a 5 minute talk about his/her own study. (Paulo presenting his research)

The whole group is gathering after dinner. Discussions continue.

The workshop was organized in the frames of the project Malaria Research Coordination Network.

Alpine swift colony

Alpine swift colony

Together with scientists from Swiss Ornithological Institute our research group have ongoing study on breeding and migration ecology in Alpine swifts (Tachymarptis melba). The study colony is situated in the city center of Sofia, Bulgaria.
The investigation is possible through the courtesy of National centre for information and documentation (Bulgaria), Patent office of Republic of Bulgaria and the Bulgarian institute of metrology in which building the colony is situated.
